Why ‘Fanwil’ Books?

When coming up with the name for my shop, I knew I wanted it to be in honour of my grandparents. To many, my grandparents were affectionately known by their nicknames, Willy and Fanny (no, seriously). And so, when they built their own house many years ago, they named that house ‘Fanwil End’. Yeah.

So thank you to my grandparents for having the most ridiculous and slightly inappropriate nicknames, I miss you both dearly.

So Why Buy Second-Hand?

Well, it’s simple really!

It is estimated that there are around 170 MILLION books currently in circulation worldwide. New books are published in their thousands, and copies printed in their millions- And they don’t all end up being lovingly cared for on someone’s bookshelf for the rest of their lives. I will often find discarded copies of books that were released just weeks ago, as well as incredible old and rare copies of books that are sitting and rotting in someone’s unused garage. There are SO many books out there that are already in need of a new home, and the turnover is fast- Second-hand doesn’t always mean old, new books are discarded all the time! There’s nothing wrong with buying new, but there are also millions of books looking for a new shelf- Or else they usually end up being burnt, or dumped in landfill.

Here are a few stats too, just to give you an idea in clear numbers:

*“The total sales for the UK’s publishing industry reaching £6.9 billion- up 4% from 2021. 669 million physical books were also sold last year. This is the highest overall level ever recorded.”

**”While it's hard to get precise, up-to-the-minute figures, studies and reports consistently highlight the problem. A 2019 report by the environmental charity, Hubbub, revealed some shocking insights. They estimated that over 320 million books were destined for landfill each year in the UK alone.”

A Bit About Me

Hello! My name is Zo, I am a 27 year old creative and book fanatic living in Suffolk, UK. Prior to opening Fanwil Books, I have been running my own small art business called Vaguely Original for the past 8 or-so years. I am deeply passionate about the work I make, and so all of the pieces you will find in the Gifts/Other section of this shop are all entirely handmade and/or designed by me.

I was an avid reader as a child, I’d never be seen without a book (shoutout to my girl Jacqueline Wilson), and then like so many others- High school destroyed my love for reading. Thankfully, in recent years I decided to pick up a book again and I was HOOKED. I suddenly remembered why I loved reading so much, the feeling of being totally lost in a story or filling my brain with new ideas was unlike anything else. Since then, I have built up my own little home-library (currently sitting at over 600 books) and I have become part of a huge community of book lovers.

Ever since I was a kid, I have dreamed of opening my own book shop and after leaving my full-time job in August 2025, I decided now was the time. I am so excited to chase my crazy dreams and share my passion for both books and art with you all, and I hope to bring you new and exciting things as often as I can! :)

Hello!
